About the Department

A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT

In fulfillment to the great aspiration and long standing demand of the people of Boko area, Jawaharlal Nehru College, Boko was established on 3rd August 1964. Gauahati University accorded to its first affiliation in 1964 up to the Pre-University (PU) standard for Arts faculty. The college received first degree affiliation in arts faculty in 1967. Department of Economics also came into being with the inception of the college offering both Pre-University (PU) and Degree courses.
Mr. S.C. Talukdar acted as the founder teacher in the department. In a later period, Mr. D.N. Sarma and Mr. A .C. Patowary joined the department thus enhancing the strength of the department. They took the helm of the teaching Economics in general courses till the introduction of the Honors course.

Although the temporary affiliation for introducing Honors course was approved in 1978, the permanent affiliation was approved in 1990 by Gauhati University. Since then the enrollment of students in the department increased significantly. In 1988, Mr. Shahjahan Ali also joined the department and worked till 1989. As a replacement of vacant post, Sanjay Saikia was appointed as a lecturer in the department who worked for a year. For a short interval, S.Nath also served the department.
The founder head of the department got retired on 30th April 1994 as a result of which two posts were lying in the department. Within a span of few academic periods, Miss. Dipanjali Das and Mr. Prahlad Bharli were appointed against two vacant posts and both joined the department on the same day on 28th September 1995. All the teachers worked as a vibrant team to impart quality education to the students till the sad demise of D.N. Sarma , the then HOD , in 2000. Unfortunately, Mr. A. C. Patowary, the then H.O.D of the Department was also expired in 2013 and Mr. Bau Nriame Kuizebe was appointed against the vacant post who joined the department on 20th February 2015.

At present, the department consists of three permanent faculty members, namely, Mrs, Dipanjali Das, Mr. Prahlad Bharali and Mr. Bau Nriame Kuizebe. In addition to permanent faculty, one guest lecture is appointed to the department from time to time. Presently, Mrs. Deepanjali Das is the Head of the Department.
