About the Department

GLIMPSE OF THE DEPARTMENT
Department of English was established in 1964. Since its inception the department has offered English as a core subject both in higher secondary and undergraduate levels. The syllabus is developed by G.U at undergraduate level and AHSEC council at higher secondary level. The department makes arrangements for fulfilling the basic aim of the curriculum.
ï‚ž Mission and Vision of the department
The primary mission of the department is to develop proficiency of English among the students.
The primary aim is to develop the four basic skills i.e listening, speaking, reading and writing. Along with that the students are given exposure to a plethora of literature in English language.
The Vision of the department is to develop citizens with good proficiency in English language with great enthusiasm for literature as a whole and enabling them to comprehend various issues and ideas related to society. They should be sensitive to issues- social, moral and ethical, and develop themselves as responsible citizens who would be fit for various jobs offered to them in the fields available.
ï‚ž Responsibilities
English is compulsory subject for both science and arts. Therefore the department has responsibilities to perform in academic activities like teaching and evaluation for students in both streams. In addition, the teachers engage themselves in consultancy for students who require. For weaker students the department organizes remedial classes. The department at regular intervals gives emphasis to mentor students, and for this purpose individual teachers are assigned with particular groups for attention.
ï‚ž Facilities
The department has a full functioning classroom and a common staff room. The department has a departmental library for students to get basic study materials. The department makes arrangement for students to access the facilities like NLIST in the Central Library.
The department has a Language Laboratory in collaboration with ODELL.
The department has arrangements for audio-visual teaching and learning. The department organizes courses for spoken and communicative English.
ï‚ž Research
The teachers are engaged in research in their individual capacities. But yet the department has to arrive at a point where they may offer services in full-time research.
ï‚ž Future Aspirations
The Department wishes to become a research hub and adapt schools and communities for developing skills in Communicative English.
