Centre Name: Dr. Bhupen Hazarika Centre for Culture and Creative Studies North east India, one of the most beautiful regions of India comprises of eight states- Arunachal Pradesh. Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland , Tripura and Sikkim. It is a land of hills and plains with luxuriant green cover and a wide variety or rare exotic flora and fauna. Each state has unique beauty, each having its own charm. This region is considered to be one of the most diverse, culturally rich and environmentally rich regions of the country. It is the abode of almost bewildering variety of communities where multiple ethnicities reside; every ethnic community has a history and shares a cultural memory. Assam, gateway of North east India is a melting pot, where culture, heritage, lifestyle, tradition, faith and beliefs of different communities have formed a tapestry of multicultural yarns of a distinct heritage. The perfect fusions of colourful festivals have made the place passionate, compelling and mesmerising. The proposed centre is aims to focus basically on the following objectives: Objectives: 1. To introduce the students with the major trends of life and culture of the people of different society. 2. To acquainted the students with the indigenous culture and changes in the cultural scenario through first hand study or intensive fieldwork. 3. To do extensive study on the various aspects of the Indian Culture, Particularly of the North east India. 4. To recognize safeguard to the endangered indigenous knowledge and culture of different tribes and communities of North –east India. 5. To strive for excellence by generating critical knowledge on the culture of different communities by building a repository of cultural resources. 6. To generate human resources with an understanding of the social cultural diversity of the region. 7. To enhance and celebrate cultural experiences, to enjoy culture by analysing it and its social meaning. 8. To understand ourselves and those around us by exploring a wide range of institutions, media, , multi culturalism and cultural heritage. Outcome of the centre: 1. Provide education and training in related skills, especially for the graduate and undergraduate students and thereby enhance the academic programmes like seminars, workshop, talk series etc. 2. Transfer and mobilize knowledge gained through research for the benefit of the society, via various mechanisms as appropriate. 3. Generating critical knowledge on culture and by building a repository of cultural resources. 4. Generating human resources with an understanding of rich cultural diversity of the region. 5. The student can produce their substantial creative works like paintings, sculptures, enamel paintings, graphic prints etc. through the centre. 6. There are many traditional folk art forms those are dying or becoming shortly obliterated. So through this centre an attempt will be made to explore the various works of the craftsmen and the folk artists of the neighbouring areas, who are still practicing their art in their villages only. 7. The centre will make an attempt to consistently expose our students to these art forms in consultation with the based craftsmen or the folk artists. This could also be done through workshop, short term training programmes which would involve the village folk artists and performers as resource persons. 8. Enhance the reputation of the constituent academic unit and the college through the quality of its work. 9. Enhance the quality of the students towards various folk performances like folk dance, folk song, folk crafts, etc., by organizing various workshops, training programmes. 10. To develop a museum this will act as a repository house of folk elements of material culture of different communities of the region particularly of this area. 11. An attempt will also be made to preserve the various cultural forms of different communities in the published form of booklet, article, periodicals, magazines, research papers in the bulletin, journals, etc.
